Move over iPhone and Blackberry: the Android is on its way to the top

Image
Thanks to a variety of devices and smart pricing, smartphones based on Google’s OS may take over the US and global cellular market by 2014. Who will be the runner up? Clue: it doesn’t have an apple on the back of it. ArsTechnica website reports that Android based devices threaten to take second place from Apple’s iPhone in the American smartphones market and by the end of the year are expected to lead the market. The German research company,Gertner, believes that by 2014 Android based devices will rule the cellular market and their distribution will be second only to Nokia’s symbian devices. RIM’s Blackberry and Apple’s iPhone will settle for third and fourth place. Read the complete article on ifreshnews.com

Fujitsu Eyes Wireless Gadget Charging for 2012

Image
Researchers at Fujitsu Laboratories have developed a wireless charging system that they say can simultaneously charge a variety of portable gadgets over a distance of several centimeters without the need for cables. The system, which will be detailed at a technical conference in Japan this week, could begin appearing in mobile phones and other products as soon as 2012, the company said. Wireless charging has been attracting increased interest in the last few years as the number of portable gadgets multiples. Manufacturers suppose that consumers are eager to get rid of the myriad of chargers and associated cables that can clutter up a modern home. Many of the wireless systems developed to date rely on inductive coupling between two coils -- a method that works over a very short distance and typically requires gadgets are placed on a charging pad. Inductive systems can also waste a lot of the power consumed. Read the complete article on pcworld.com

Android now 25% of mobile web use as iOS lead erodes

Image
Devices running Google's Android mobile operating system now account for 25 percent of mobile web consumption in North America, up 2 percent month over month and an 18.6 percent year-over-year increase, according to new data published by web metrics firm Quantcast. Android's gains come at the expense of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, which now represents 56 percent of mobile web consumption, down 0.3 percent month-over-month and 11.4 percent year-over-year; Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) also slipped, dropping 0.6 percent month-over-month and 1.6 percent year-over-year, and now accounts for 9.0 percent of mobile web use. Rival operating systems make up the remaining 10 percent, down 1.1 percent month-over-month and 5.7 percent year-over-year. Adobe shares jump after Apple decision on Flash

Image
Shares of Adobe Systems Inc. jumped Thursday after Apple Inc. removed one obstacle keeping developers of mobile software for Apple's app store from using Adobe's technology. THE SPARK: Apple said that it will lift a ban on third-party software developers using tools that translate code written for other venues. That means app developers will be able to covert programs written with Adobe's Flash technology without having to rewrite them using a competing standard. THE BIG PICTURE: Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resisted allowing Flash on Apple's mobile gadgets, calling it outdated and unreliable. He favors alternatives such as HTML5. Because Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad have proven so popular, the company's resistance to Flash threatened to push more software developers away from Adobe's technology. SHARE ACTION: Adobe shares jumped $3.17, or 11 percent, to $32.48 in morning trading. Source: businessweek

Toshiba Folio 100 goes official, lands in Q4

Image
If Samsung's Galaxy Tab reads like a how-to for making a decent Android tablet, Toshiba's Folio 100 seems to serve an opposite purpose (starting with that unfortunate name), which is disappointing for a company like Toshiba. The tablet just got official here at IFA, after being spotted on the show floor earlier today, but there's nothing in the press release to change our initial impressions of the device. There's a 1024 x 600 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, Tegra 2 under the hood, 16GB of built-in storage, SD card expansion, HDMI out, 802.11n WiFi, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and Android 2.2 with Flash 10.1 running on top of it all. Toshiba claims 7 hours of battery of "regular" use (65% web browsing, 10% video playback, 25% standby), and everything is packed into a 0.55-inch thick form factor that weighs 1.7 pounds. Software-wise Toshiba has baked in Opera, Toshiba Media Player, FBReader, Fring (for video calls), Documents To Go, and Evernote, with Tos

Nike iPhone app keeps track of where, how fast you run

Image
There was a time when going out for a run meant putting on some sneakers and leaving for a jog around the park. But if you need any indication of how far we’ve come, take a look at Nike’s latest Nike+ GPS app for the iPhone, released today on Apple’s App Store. Using the iPhone’s GPS and accelerometer, the app lets you track not only your pace, distance, and calories when you go out for runs, but visually maps your run routes on Google Maps, showing you where you went and at which exact points you sprinted or slowed down. Unlike previous Nike+ iPod offerings, no special sensors or kits are required for the app to function. A couple of features worth mentioning are voice feedback — which lets you know how you’re doing — and the ability to tap on the map at anytime to see how far you’ve come. Additionally, some will appreciate its integration with the popular PowerSongs feature from other Nike+ apps, which lets you setup and play specific songs for different types of runs. The

Nikon Coolpix S8100: A 1080p, 10x Zoom Point-and-Shoot That Actually Fits In Your Pocket

Image
Any point-and-shoot can fit in your bag, but not every point-and-shoot can fit in your pants. The super-slim Nikon S8100, however, doesn't sacrifice power for pocketability: it shoots 1080p video; and has 10x optical zoom and 10fps full-res high-speed shooting. The Coolpix S8000 impressed us in February by squeezing a big lens on a decidedly not-big body. The S8100 scales back the megapixels from 14.2 to 12.1 with a new backlit illuminated CMOS sensor for better low-light shooting and otherwise sweetens the deal with the ability to shoot 1080p HD video and 120fps slow-mo in Sports Continuous mode. The S8100 also adds Nikon's EXPEED C2 image processing engine and 4-way vibration reducing image stabilization for the shaky handed. The S8100 will be available late this month for $300 in black, gold and red. Source: Gizmodo

Should You Give Up Gadgets for a Day?

Image
Clearly, some of us make bad decisions with our gadgets. But even without having to live down a mobile phone-fueled tirade of Gibsonian proportions, many of us have sought forgiveness for our gadget-enabled sins through a ritual purge. That’s the idea behind Offlining, Inc., which proposes that we all participate in a one-day digital fast. Initially, the call was for a collective fast on September 18, Yom Kippur — the Jewish day of atonement, which calls for total rest (including prohibiting use of any electronic devices) and abstaining from food and drink. Now, the team appears to be targeting Thanksgiving instead. It’s an unusual exercise — an advertising campaign for nothing in particular (besides signing up to “pledge” to participate in a no-device day) that can’t quite decide whether it’s holy or secular, just as it can’t decide whether life online does terrible things to you or that a one-day holiday from them would be kind of nice. The site includes a bullet-pointed “Ugly

Men and Women – Two Different Gadgets?

Image
If you were to ask me, I don’t think gender should be an issue as far as gadgets are concerned. Take for instance “texting” for that matter. Texting among adults is on the rise, with more than 72 percent of those over 18 using the technology, but their usage still pales in comparison to texting among teenagers, who send an average of five times as many texts as their adult counterparts. The Pew Internet & American Life Project surveyed 2,252 people and found out that about 72 percent of adults said they sent text messages in May 2010, compared to 65 percent of people surveyed in September 2009. Adult texters are sending an average of 10 texts per day, while those ages 12 to 17 are sending about 50 texts per day. There are some prolific adult texters – about 5 percent of adults send 200 texts per day or more; about 15 percent of teens do the same. Gender is not a major factor when it comes to texting; men and women send and receive the same number of texts on a daily basis.

Over one million join Apple's music social network Ping

Image
More than one million users joined Apple's new music-focused social network Ping in the 48 hours following its launch, the company said. Apple said one-third of the people who downloaded iTunes 10, the latest version of its online entertainment store, signed up for Ping, which was unveiled by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs in San Francisco on Wednesday. "As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing," Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of Internet services, said in a statement late Friday. Ping, available as a free download at itunes.com, allows users to view photos and videos of their favorite musicians and receive information about concert dates. Ping users can also connect with friends online to discuss albums and songs and make musical recommendations. "It's sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes," Apple's Jobs said. Rumor: Apple Upgrading iPad, Releasing 7-inch Model in 2011

Image
Apple is upgrading its 9.7-inch iPad with a faster ARM processor and is releasing a smaller 7-inch iPad in 2011, according to rumors. Digitimes reports that Apple is set to launch "an upgraded 9.7-inch iPad adopting a new ARM Cortex-A9-based processor and 512MB RAM in the first quarter of 2011." Apple is also prepping "a 7-inch iPad using the Cortex-A9 processor and an IPS panel with a resolution of 1024×768." What's the New Technology? The original iPad sported an A4 processor that Apple created on its own. If Digitimes' rumors are true, Apple will switch to the latest ARM technology and integrate the Cortex-A9. ARM boosted the Cortex-A9's processor speed up to 2GHz last year, which could make the iPad a seriously powerful device. The new processor also draws less power, thus improving the iPad's so-so battery life. Read the complete article on pcworld.com

7 of the coolest gadgets on show at IFA 2010

Image
Wandering around the halls of the Messe Berlin for IFA 2010, it's easy to be blasé about new technology. Especially when there are 26 exhibition halls crammed with 3D televisions, brand new laptops, camcorders, 3D Blu-ray players and all manner of computing and AV hardware. It makes defining the 'best' kit at an IFA show a tricky task. What really stands out? Where are the real "ooh" and "aah" moments that twang the heart strings of your inner geek? Here's our pick of the gadgetry that we think is worth a second look… The Samsung Galaxy Tab Microsoft must be kicking itself. Or perhaps it's developed some sort of prototype robotic boot device that can kick people for it. Really hard. Because while Bill Gates predicted the success of the tablet PC back in 2001, he didn't foresee that it would be running Android rather than Windows. Five Best Video Editing apps for iPhone

Photo apps for iPhone are big business, and with pin-sharp high definition video on the new iPhone 4, we can expect video apps to become even more important. Of course it's one thing to make an app that puts colour filters on a photo - editing video is a lot more complicated and requires more powerful software. Perhaps that's why the choice is currently pretty limited. There's some very simple video editing software on board the iPhone 4, but all it really allows you to do is trim the clip. And while you can export video straight from your library, there is a limit on how large the clips can be. Read the complete article on shinyshiny.tv

The additions to the official coverage list are Boston, MA; Daytona Beach, FL; and Providence, RI. With the additions, Sprint now covers over 40 million people in approximately 40 large U.S. cities.
