Android now 25% of mobile web use as iOS lead erodes

Devices running Google's Android mobile operating system now account for 25 percent of mobile web consumption in North America, up 2 percent month over month and an 18.6 percent year-over-year increase, according to new data published by web metrics firm Quantcast.

Android's gains come at the expense of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, which now represents 56 percent of mobile web consumption, down 0.3 percent month-over-month and 11.4 percent year-over-year; Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) also slipped, dropping 0.6 percent month-over-month and 1.6 percent year-over-year, and now accounts for 9.0 percent of mobile web use.

Rival operating systems make up the remaining 10 percent, down 1.1 percent month-over-month and 5.7 percent year-over-year. Quantcast adds its research is based on more than 4 billion mobile pageviews reported during August 2010.

Fujitsu Eyes Wireless Gadget Charging for 2012

Researchers at Fujitsu Laboratories have developed a wireless charging system that they say can simultaneously charge a variety of portable gadgets over a distance of several centimeters without the need for cables. The system, which will be detailed at a technical conference in Japan this week, could begin appearing in mobile phones and other products as soon as 2012, the company said. Wireless charging has been attracting increased interest in the last few years as the number of portable gadgets multiples. Manufacturers suppose that consumers are eager to get rid of the myriad of chargers and associated cables that can clutter up a modern home. Many of the wireless systems developed to date rely on inductive coupling between two coils -- a method that works over a very short distance and typically requires gadgets are placed on a charging pad. A Galaxy seizing the planet

Samsung, one of the two largest South Korean electronics powerhouses, has become a mobile phone producer to be reckoned with. From time to time, Samsung creates products that grab our attention — and our wallets. Testifying to its growing strength in the smartphone industry, the Aug. 5 edition of The Korea Times reported Samsung will open its twelfth R&D center in Bangladesh next year, focused on software development in response to surging market demand for upgraded smartphone technology.
