Rumor: Apple Upgrading iPad, Releasing 7-inch Model in 2011

Apple iPad Tablet (32GB, Wi-Fi)Apple is upgrading its 9.7-inch iPad with a faster ARM processor and is releasing a smaller 7-inch iPad in 2011, according to rumors. Digitimes reports that Apple is set to launch "an upgraded 9.7-inch iPad adopting a new ARM Cortex-A9-based processor and 512MB RAM in the first quarter of 2011." Apple is also prepping "a 7-inch iPad using the Cortex-A9 processor and an IPS panel with a resolution of 1024×768."

What's the New Technology?

The original iPad sported an A4 processor that Apple created on its own. If Digitimes' rumors are true, Apple will switch to the latest ARM technology and integrate the Cortex-A9. ARM boosted the Cortex-A9's processor speed up to 2GHz last year, which could make the iPad a seriously powerful device. The new processor also draws less power, thus improving the iPad's so-so battery life.

Fujitsu Eyes Wireless Gadget Charging for 2012

Researchers at Fujitsu Laboratories have developed a wireless charging system that they say can simultaneously charge a variety of portable gadgets over a distance of several centimeters without the need for cables. The system, which will be detailed at a technical conference in Japan this week, could begin appearing in mobile phones and other products as soon as 2012, the company said. Wireless charging has been attracting increased interest in the last few years as the number of portable gadgets multiples. Manufacturers suppose that consumers are eager to get rid of the myriad of chargers and associated cables that can clutter up a modern home. Many of the wireless systems developed to date rely on inductive coupling between two coils -- a method that works over a very short distance and typically requires gadgets are placed on a charging pad. Samsung, one of the two largest South Korean electronics powerhouses, has become a mobile phone producer to be reckoned with. From time to time, Samsung creates products that grab our attention — and our wallets. Testifying to its growing strength in the smartphone industry, the Aug. 5 edition of The Korea Times reported Samsung will open its twelfth R&D center in Bangladesh next year, focused on software development in response to surging market demand for upgraded smartphone technology.
