Adobe shares jump after Apple decision on Flash

Image
Shares of Adobe Systems Inc. jumped Thursday after Apple Inc. removed one obstacle keeping developers of mobile software for Apple's app store from using Adobe's technology. THE SPARK: Apple said that it will lift a ban on third-party software developers using tools that translate code written for other venues. That means app developers will be able to covert programs written with Adobe's Flash technology without having to rewrite them using a competing standard. THE BIG PICTURE: Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resisted allowing Flash on Apple's mobile gadgets, calling it outdated and unreliable. He favors alternatives such as HTML5. Because Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad have proven so popular, the company's resistance to Flash threatened to push more software developers away from Adobe's technology. SHARE ACTION: Adobe shares jumped $3.17, or 11 percent, to $32.48 in morning trading. Source: businessweek

Over one million join Apple's music social network Ping

Image
More than one million users joined Apple's new music-focused social network Ping in the 48 hours following its launch, the company said. Apple said one-third of the people who downloaded iTunes 10, the latest version of its online entertainment store, signed up for Ping, which was unveiled by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs in San Francisco on Wednesday. "As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing," Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of Internet services, said in a statement late Friday. Ping, available as a free download at itunes.com, allows users to view photos and videos of their favorite musicians and receive information about concert dates. Ping users can also connect with friends online to discuss albums and songs and make musical recommendations. "It's sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes," Apple's Jobs said. Apple is upgrading its 9.7-inch iPad with a faster ARM processor and is releasing a smaller 7-inch iPad in 2011, according to rumors. Digitimes reports that Apple is set to launch "an upgraded 9.7-inch iPad adopting a new ARM Cortex-A9-based processor and 512MB RAM in the first quarter of 2011." Apple is also prepping "a 7-inch iPad using the Cortex-A9 processor and an IPS panel with a resolution of 1024×768." What's the New Technology? The original iPad sported an A4 processor that Apple created on its own. If Digitimes' rumors are true, Apple will switch to the latest ARM technology and integrate the Cortex-A9. ARM boosted the Cortex-A9's processor speed up to 2GHz last year, which could make the iPad a seriously powerful device. The new processor also draws less power, thus improving the iPad's so-so battery life. Read the complete article on pcworld.com
